Round 50--Art Stamp --Group A (6.09)

After thinking about the theme for my stamp, I wanted to honor an icon in the design industry. I chose Paul Rand, brand identity guru and pioneer who has designed the logos for ABC, UPS, IBM and Westinghouse to name a few. There was a college project my professor gave us based on a Rand book title called, "A Designer's Art" which was completely set in the family of Helvetica. My type professor, Ron Arnholm, studied under Paul Rand at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Part of my stamp project plays an homage to both that project from Arnholm and Rand. Three of Rands logos are depicted on the stamp (all or in part). Designed in Adobe Illustrator CS4. Font is the Helvetica Neue family.

We are still heavily influenced in modern design by 20th Century art/design movements such as De Stijl, DADA and Bauhaus. The geometric and mathematical philosophies driving these movements are still relevant today and I wanted to pay homage to those styles in my stamp design. I used Agency typeface for its geometric shape, and the design of the stamp is a reference to the "VAN NELLE's GEBROKEN" Coffee Cup poster from the De Stijl movement. I kept the "unity and plurality" of the design but switched out the coffee mug for a simplified postcard symbol (which sort of looks like a face).
