Round 49--Numerals --Group A (3.09)

The number 8 is a lucky number for me. I graduated from high school in 1988 (The Great 88) and the numeral 88 is a lucky number in the Asian culture. I decided to select 7 fonts that I use in my personal design work and type set the number 8. I also drew two circles to form the number 8 and creating eight 8s. Fonts selected are: Helvetica Neue Condensed Heavy, Universe Ultra Thin Condensed, Rosewood, ITC Legacy Serif, Eurostile Medium, Porcelain and Futura Light. As I was playing with colors I originally selected grays and blue tones. I wanted the image to be more alive, so I chose a red orange and turquoise for the vibrancy (opposites on the color wheel) with vibrant purples on some of the numbers. Eventually the design became a 2 color piece with the numbers reversed out of the original drawn letterform. Almost like the 8's contained within an 8. I'm happy with the finished product and think it would be a great poster. It looks a little modern retro.

I based mine on the ultimate answer from "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy". For the personal amusement of some close friends and I, we periodically try to come up with non-sequitier questions to fit the answer, and it just seems appropriate for this challenge.

No. 9 seems to be the most mystical of numbers, a number for magic and incubation; it's as far as you can go before you burst out into double digits. My postcard was inspired by my cat, Mr. Jenson Black, who's managed to use up a few of his nine lives already. The number nine is hand-drawn, other typefaces used on the mailed version are Shelly Allegro and Agency.

I tried to keep this assignment nice and simple. I didn't over think it. I wound up with a stream of consciousness kind of thing. It's not an overly exciting design, but I think it works.

I choose the number "8" simply because of its similarity to the fascinating Mobius strip. A Mšbius strip can be constructed by joining the ends of a strip of paper with a single half-twist. If you were to crawl along the length of this strip, you would return to its starting point having traversed both sides of the strip, without ever crossing an edge. Something to think about.
