Round 46--Magazine Cover --Group A (5.08)

My project started out as a cover for Sojourn with a coastal image I took last summer. I wasn't pleased with that direction and decided to brainstorm some more and finally decided on The Botanist as my cover. My first idea was to shoot some potting soil that would cover the entire page like a planting bed. The initial layouts were uninspiring. I then noticed a metal pot with bulbs of daffodils in my mom's backyard on her potting bench. I took several shots at different angles and finally came up with an image I was pleased with. The font used is Eurostile. Software is Adobe Illustrator 10.

About S O J O U R N magazine This is a publication for world travelers, not tourists. Providing cutting edge social commentary, cultural views and art reviews in targeted regions or countries. This June edition is covering China - including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Hainan. Every edition has a pull out map, event and restaurant guide for a featured city. Each cover shows a portion of a word map with the featured region/country highlighted. Each magazine also has a fictional short story that fits the theme in someway (perfect for reading on the train or plane). The cover art and magazine layout uses colors from the region and alludes to the tapestry of culture and experience travel brings. I was inspired by train station arrival and departure boards, and I wanted to convey the idea of travel in a fast-paced digital world.

I took this photograph in the Outer Banks about a year ago; I love the graininess of the sand! The fonts I used are Gill Sans and News Gothic.
