Round 45--Wine Label 2 --Group A (3.08)

My wine label was inspired by a photograph I took in 2006 of a tree trunk and roots washed up on a beach in Savannah, GA. The name for the wine seemed obvious, Driftwood. Since I'm not a wine connoisseur, I did a little research to find out the kind of wines that have an oak wood flavor and discovered that Cabernet Sauvignon was a common type for this category. Having lived about 30 miles from Sonomo and Napa Valley in Marin County, I had the opportunity to visit the winery of Robert Mondavi. I have plans to start a small side venture offering art prints and illustrations for retail. My driftwood photo will be included in this collection. Fonts used are ITC Legacy Sans Caps and Cezzane. Software is Adobe Illustrator 10.

With this project I wanted to create a unique story. Using real facts from my family I constructed an historical fiction. I drew my inspiration from my greek heritage using my mother and aunts as my cast of characters.

The label uses historically accurate fonts (Caslon and Futura) from the 1940s with a hand colored photograph. Using old yellowed paper from a 1960s book (that I completely unbound to get full clean sheets) I printed the labels, and used rubber stamp pad ink to enhance the edges and give it more of an aged feeling. The inner envelope is from a box of old christmas cards from the 1950s that was purchased at a local garage sale and on it I printed a greek stamp that was issued in 1967, so someone sending a letter in '69 would have had access to it. (the tiny envelopes did get jammed in my printer and some of them got really wrinkled, I think it added to its aged look).

For the inner letter tracing paper was used to give the feel of the old fashioned onion skin letters I used to get from my grandfather in Greece. The dates are of very personal significance. If this were real it would have all been written in greek, but my greek language skills are limited and then of course, we all speak english.

In my personal letter to you, my fellow post card club friends, I wanted to create a typewriter feeling and so used Lucida Sans Typewriter font, but made all the lower case letter Ns and Os in regular and everything else in bold to give an individual, quirky type feel.

I hope you enjoy getting this letter.

Shortly after getting this assignment I found out that my uncle makes his own wine. I used a photo that my father had taken in the town of Linguaglossa, Sicily, where my family is from. I think he will be quite surprised when he gets this postcard in the mail.
