Round 44--Menu Design --Group A (12.07)

I designed a menu for a made-up asian-fusion bistro, Arias. Upon coming up with my menu items I started using adjectives that related to music then decided to carry the theme throughout. When I was researching definitions I came across the word aria which means an air or melody or an elaborate melody sung solo with an accompaniment. I chose this name for the restaurant and designed a logo type treatment. The name is meant to relate to the patron with an accompaniment of flavors that is music to the tastebuds. Titles of dishes include: Scallop Symphony, Glazed Duck Duet, Sea Bass Sonata, Mignon Medley, Creme Brulee Cantata and Harmony Teas. Chrysanthemums and leaves of bamboo carry out the Asian theme with a very asian green color that ties into cooking and food. The menu itself would be approximately 7"x10" actual size. Fonts used are ITC Legacy Sans Caps and software is Adobe Illustrator 10.

I started this assignment by searching in my drawer of ephemera. Since I collect old post cards I came across one that was from India. I loved the patina on it, and as I looked closer I noticed the stamp area said NINE PIES. I was not sure what it meant, and found that a pie is a now defunct unit of currency from the area. Well it was perfect for my cafe menu, I decided I would use the familiar meaning of the word and serve only pie (the kind we eat). I went on to research the names of cities in India, and combined the names up with the rubber stamped words you would find on old cancelled mail. I then looked into the cuisine of each city and developed a modern twist on some classical recipes, all "NINE" of them turned into some kind of pie, tart or turnover. I had to do some heavy photoshop work on the original card, since it was covered with text and then I changed the word from Post Card to Post Cafe. I left the signature and made him the proprietor of the place. I used American Typewriter for the font on the menu as I pictured them typed using a classic Underwood on old post cards they found. Samarkan is used to simulate the hand-written note by P Mevta. The Nine Pies India Post Cafe is imagined to be located in a converted old post office building, near Walkeshwar Temple on Malabar Hill, in Mumbai.

My restaurant is a hip and fresh little sushi and saki bar, called Obi. The design is a accordion fold menu with a belly band for mailing - which also playfully looks like the sash to a kimono (an obi). The band is also a free drink ticket to get new customers in the door. The typeface is Democratica and Century. Cover pattern was scanned in from an old greeting card.
