Round 34--Coffee Cup--Group A (4.06)
After an initial idea for an urban coffee hut named 'the Quonset' I decided to shift gears after some concept sketches that weren't working visually. My next concept was inspired by an image I saw on a stock photo cd of some pomegranates. Somehow that imagery stuck in my mind so I drew the basic shape in Adobe Illustrator and began playing with transparencies and lines. I also remember a billboard I saw in Chicago promoting pomegranate juice. I made up the name of the establishment as 'The Pom' Coffee House with a tag stating, Atlanta's Grounds for Coffee Since 1988. I added some swirly steam rising from each fruit as if it's freshly brewed. As a last minute idea to add some texture I had a file I scanned of a piece of rice paper a while back for a label. The fonts used are Humana and Copperplate.

This round I decided to pay tribute to my husband's grandmother, Johanna. She is in her 90šs and a real inspiration to the rest of the family. She loves her coffee and in Indonesian tradition uses evaporated milk to lighten it. The name of the cafe is Orchid Coffee and it reads, Oma says, It is best with evap.

After struggling to find a unique take on the coffe biz, I finally decided on the name, "Karma" Karma means "sum of all that an individual has done, is currently doing and will do". Therefore, the wavy lines represent the entirety of an indiviual's actions. Like the Jones Soda bottles, Karma Coffee would offer up a bit of "wisdom" using thermal ink that appears only after the hot liquid cools or is consumed. The customer is rewarded with their own fun, kitchy karma. So the tagline became "What's Yours?" Since I now had a strong identity and tagline, I decided to forego rendering a realistic depiction of a coffee cup in favor of an ad featuring the coffee cup in a more abstract way.

Completed in Illustrator 10 for the Mac. Texture applied in Photoshop. In keeping with the Italian theme for "Il Bar di Caffe", The Coffee Bar, I chose p22 DaVinci for the font.

I can't claim the name, I chose to interpret the name of my favorite college coffee spot with some interesting imagery that it brought to mind.
